How NOS Works
An engine produces power by burning a mixture of fuel and oxygen. Normally, an engine relies on the ambient air pulled through its intake to supply oxygen. However, a nitrous oxide system acts as a form of chemical supercharging:- Decomposition: Nitrous oxide is stored as a compressed liquid in a dedicated cylinder. When injected into the intake manifold, it encounters the heat of the engine and breaks down into nitrogen and oxygen.
- Oxygen Enrichment: The breakdown releases a high concentration of oxygen—far denser than what normal atmospheric air provides.
- Increased Fuel Burn: Because significantly more oxygen is present, the engine can burn a correspondingly larger amount of fuel at the same time. This creates more forceful explosions inside the cylinders, driving the pistons down with greater power.
- Intake Cooling: As the liquid nitrous rapidly converts into a gas, it absorbs heat from the surrounding intake air, providing a powerful cooling effect that makes the air-fuel charge denser and safer against overheating.
Main Types of Systems
Nitrous systems generally fall into two categories depending on how they deliver extra fuel to match the oxygen boost:- Dry Systems: The system injects only nitrous oxide into the intake, while the engine's existing electronic fuel injectors are automatically signaled to increase fuel delivery (by raising pressure or extending injector pulse width).
- Wet Systems: The system uses specific nozzles to spray both nitrous oxide and an extra supply of atomized fuel simultaneously directly into the intake tract.
Pros and Cons
Advantages:
- Cost-Effective Power: NOS kits typically offer the highest horsepower-per-dollar ratio compared to turbochargers or superchargers.- On-Demand Operation: The system remains dormant during normal driving, preserving fuel economy and engine wear until the driver explicitly activates it (usually via a throttle switch at wide-open throttle).
Risks:
- Engine Stress: The sudden spike in cylinder pressure and heat can cause "detonation" (knocking), which can crack pistons, bend connecting rods, or destroy an engine if it isn't properly tuned or reinforced.- Legal Restrictions: In many jurisdictions, using nitrous systems on public streets and highways is illegal, restricting their legal use to closed tracks and specialized racing classes.

Beyond real-world racetracks and automotive culture, NOS achieved massive mainstream popularity through its heavy presence in entertainment and video games.
